What Louisville City Trash Won’t Pick Up (And How to Get Rid of It)
You dragged the heavy couch to the curb. You scheduled your appointment with Metro 311. You waited.
But when you came home from work, the truck was gone, and your stuff was still there—maybe with an orange “Non-Compliant” sticker slapped on it.
If you live in the Louisville Urban Services District, you know the frustration. While our city services are great for weekly bins, the regulations for “Large Item Pickup” are strict. Many homeowners don’t realize that construction debris, loose piles, and electronics are often banned from the curb.
As a local junk removal team, we see this every day. Here is the honest breakdown of what the city won’t touch, and how you can finally get it off your property.
1. The “Construction Debris” Ban
This is the #1 reason we get calls from frustrated homeowners.
According to Louisville Metro Ordinance, city crews are strictly prohibited from picking up “construction and demolition debris.” Even if you cut it up and bundle it, they will often leave it behind.
The City Will NOT Take:
- Drywall and Plaster
- Lumber and Wood Scraps (unless it’s tree limbs, which have different rules)
- Flooring: Laminate, carpet rolls (unless cut very small), and tile.
- Concrete, Bricks, and Rocks: These can damage the city compactor trucks.
- Roofing Shingles
The Solution: You have two choices. You can rent a truck and haul it to the Waste Reduction Center on Meriwether Avenue (where you will pay fees by weight), or you can call a private hauler. At Griswold Rubbish Removal, we load construction debris straight from your driveway or backyard—no need to drag it to the curb.
Stuck with construction debris? Don’t rent a truck. Call us at (502) 975-0493 and we will load it for you.
2. The “4-Item” Limit
Did you know the appointment-based system has a hard cap?
The Rule: You can only set out up to 4 large items per appointment.
If you are clearing out a garage, a basement, or handling an estate cleanout, 4 items is nothing. You might have 20 bags of trash, 3 bookshelves, a mattress, and a pile of old toys. If you put it all out, the city might pick up the first 4 items and leave the rest of the mess on your lawn.
3. The “Loose Pile” Trap
This is a common mistake. You have a bunch of small junk—old toys, broken kitchen gadgets, clothes, and knick-knacks. You bag them up or put them in cardboard boxes and set them next to your couch.
The City Will Reject It. The city states: “Small items, even if they are bagged or boxed, are not accepted.” They want large furniture items only. They do not want to hand-load 15 garbage bags of clutter.
The Solution: We take it all. Loose items, bagged trash, boxes of books—if you want it gone, we take it. We even sweep up the area after we are done.
4. Electronics & “Freon” Appliances
You cannot put an old tube TV or a computer monitor on the curb in Louisville. These are considered E-Waste and must be recycled properly.
Similarly, if you have a refrigerator, freezer, or window A/C unit, the city often requires you to remove the doors and may reject it if they suspect it still contains Freon (refrigerant).
When to Call a Private Hauler (Us)
The city service is free (via your taxes), and we recommend you use it for simple things—like a single mattress or an old sofa.
But you should call Griswold Rubbish Removal when:
- You have too much stuff: More than 4 items.
- You can’t lift it: The city requires you to get the items to the curb. We go into your basement, attic, or backyard and carry it out for you.
- It’s “Banned” material: Construction waste, heavy debris, or tires (we take more than the city limit of 4).
- You need it gone TODAY: City appointments can take weeks to schedule. We often offer same-day or next-day pickup.
Don’t let a “Non-Compliant” sticker ruin your week.
